What canon means for writers

Canon is the durable truth of a story. It includes the facts that should remain stable unless the author intentionally changes them. Canon can include character history, world rules, magic systems, timeline events, geography, institutions, factions, relationships, backstory, secrets and reveal boundaries. Canon does not mean every idea is fixed forever—it means the writer knows what is true, what is provisional and what has been rejected.

Why canon gets hard to manage

Early in a project, canon feels manageable—the author remembers the rules. Then the manuscript grows.
